Remembering Wookie (Barn Owl)
Wookie was a Barn Owl. He was found in the wild and taken to a local vet. The vet turned him over to someone who, instead of taking him to a rehab facility, took him home. Barn Owls don't make good pets! They are loud and messy and would really rather have open fields and skies in front of them, not a couch and 4 walls. By the time he was taken to a wildlife rehab facility, he had two issues that made him unreleasable. First, he was imprinted and no longer knew how to be a Barn Owl. Second, he hadn't been fed properly and we worried that he had metabolic bone disease from lack of the proper nutrients while he was growing up. So Wookie became a reluctant ambassador for the Hungry Owl Project.
Barn Owls normally have a short life, living about 2 years in the wild. In captivity, they can live much longer, and Wookie was at least 8 years old when he died.
